Reschedule your Worries

Are you worried?  Thinking about a loved one or trouble at work? Worried about something you are in charge of or a relationship problem?   Have you ever considered “rescheduling” your worry?  Can you give yourself 5 minutes to worry about it today then open up your calendar and reschedule a “worry time” a week from now?

Example: I was worried about my grand daughter.  When I became aware of her behavior I began to worry.  I wish I could do something to help.  After thinking about it,  I realized that I couldn’t do anything about it today except pray.  I then opened up my calendar and rescheduled my worry for next week when I was going to be with  someone who had more experience and insight than I had.

Rescheduling my worried is often the best solution for everyoneworry-445511.

Limbo Lanes and Headache Help

It was 6 A.M. and black outside.  Winter was taking her toll as freezing rain fell on the unfamiliar parking lot. As I left the store   I wondered how to head home.  I had gone farther away from home because my Wal-mart didn’t have what I needed and I had to leave for a workshop by 7A.M.

 

Because of the rain I didn’t want to risk traveling the freeways so I decided to turn left onto a smaller local road.  I watched the lights turn red, yellow and green as I waited for the green arrow turning lane.  That time of the morning there was no one behind me but plenty of cars were whizzing past me to head to the freeway.  I wondered when I would see my green arrow turn green. It seemed as if everyone else’s lights turned green three times while I waited for one!  Finally I realized that I wasn’t in the Since no one was in the left turning lane the light wasn’t changing!  I had mistakenly aligned myself in the freeway access land.  There, of course I would never encounter the left turn arrow and forever remain in limbo.

 

After I changed lanes I continued on my way home, I thought of the many times my life had similarly been in limbo.  Times when it seemed that hope as I might, I got everything but my green arrow.

 

Years ago when I was recovering from brain tumor surgery.  I often experienced debilitating headaches that left me in limbo, stopping me from moving forward in my recovery. This ordeal lasted for months on end.

 

I remember one spring day in West Jordan sitting at the kitchen table and looking out at the patches of weeds in back yard that was meant to be a garden.  “One more thing I’m not doing,” I sighed, wondering what the rest of the day would be like.

 

At that moment an idea popped into my head, “If you spend 10 minutes a day you can recapture part of that area and make it beautiful. That is something you CAN control.”  A few days later I went to the library and learned about circle gardens. There I learned that I could dig out shallow garbage can lid sized mini garden plots and plant tomatoes  and peas at the edges.  By the end of the summer there were many things I still could not control because of my health issues, but I remember feeling blessed that such a simple idea could help in such a profound way.  A little it at a time I was burrowing out of limbo.

Acceptance Led to Rebuilding

 

          My feelings of futile powerlessness began to be replaced with a kind of spunky protectiveness as I learned preventative measures such as nutrition, chiropractic care and some alternative medicine.  I typed up a paper that included names and phone numbers of people who were willing to take over for me if I needed it.  The paper also listed ideas for medications and what I could do to ease my head pain such as a chiropractor, cold packs, etc.   

 

When the inevitable pain arrived, I pulled out my large print paper and followed the course of action I had previously outlined. (When I was in pain, it was hard to open my eyes, let alone think very well.)  The paper took over the thinking process, allowing me to focus on moving through the list. .- My Journey from Darkness to Light pg. 72 (LDS version)

 

So, the next time we find ourselves caught up in the limbo lane (whether it is waiting for that new baby to be born, building a new home, struggling with health issues, wondering if “he” will ever pop the question or simply waiting in line at the store) we can prayerfully examine our situation, switch lanes and find something, however small, that we can control and do it!

 

“By small and simple things are great things brought to pass” (Alma 37:6).

 

 

 

 

How to Measure a Man – not judging others

If I could have three wishes, one of them would definitely be that I would not judge others.

That is why I love a quote I came across in the bathroom this morning.  It simply said “Measure a man by his heart.” Those brief words struck me with clarity as I pondered my thoughts over the last few days.  I thought of how I had “measured” my husband, my neighbor, a friend and myself with a straight, unyielding yardstick.  From now on I want to embrace the numbers shown by a simply measuring by his/her heart.

There is a member of our church in Utah who is bipolar and who has a stepson who is bipolar. She knows what depression is all about. Small Ideas Making a Big Difference in going from Anxiety to Peace

“My medicine isn’t kicking in like it should. I am cycling from depression to grandiose ideas. This bipolar stinks! Do you have any ideas?” My friend anxiously asked.

As we talked there were three main ideas that came to my mind:
1. Ponder Pages
2. Prayer by Prayer
3. “Leaf”ing negative feelings behind

Ponder pages: Having a place for ideas/goals/should-dos in a notebook or planner or PDA can be invaluable. When ideas about what you should or want to do come (often in a torrent) write them down, committing yourself to prayerfully think about them in a quiet moment (doing laundry, dishes, driving etc.) I have often found that by the time I ponder on it I no longer have the desire to do it, I realize that it isn’t the right time or I have ideas about how it can become a reality.

This is more fully described in my book My Journey from Darkness to Light. Basically I have learned that when I begin to feel overwhelmed it helps to:
A. Stop what I’m doing
B. Pray for help
C. Tell the Lord what I feel I need to/should be doing (I usually look at my planner and name 4-5 most pressing things)
D. I rub my hands together as if I had sand between my palms and the sand represents the pressures I am feeling. In a sense I let the sand (pressures) fall from my palms into the hands of my Savior leaving me with open hands ready to listen to what my Savior wants me to do.
E. Ask to know what HE wants me to do
F. At this point either (1) I have 2-3 ideas come back to me (often my thoughts include simple things like eat, take my meds and one of my 5 ideas) or (2) I don’t have any specific impressions but I am able to return to my list with less pressure and choose more wisely the things I can do that will bring me the greatest peace and happiness

Negative/Pressure Thoughts Feeling Can I know this is totally true? Talk back

The house is a mess Overwhelmed, guilty, fearful No Maybe it isn’t as clean as I like but it’s not a total mess!
She is not answering her phone. She doesn’t want to talk to me. Sad, hurt, guilty No I am mind-reading. Her phone may be having trouble. I can pray and call a mutual friend.

These simple ideas can be the difference between anxiety and peace. May they bless your life like they have mine.

Recipe for Analyzing Dreams

Have you ever woken up with strong feelings of being overwhelmed or feeling fear, guilt or anger because of a dream?

I have.

Through the years I have developed a recipe for analyzing dreams based on research and my own personal experiences.  I hope this helps you as much as it does me:

Pray and ask for wisdom to understand what your dream means to you then write down:

1. A list of the emotions generated through your dream (fearful, guilty, excited, angry etc.)
2. A list of people who where in the dream (Yourself, family members, stranger descriptions etc.)                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     3. A list of prominate things or places in your dream (garage, street, at work etc.)

Now you are ready to analyze what it has to do with your life.  Ask yourself:

1. Where in real life are you feeling those feelings?
2. Are you experiencing those feelings with the people in your dream?
3. Do you have negative/excited feelings about the things/places you saw in your dream?     

    You may be surprised at how much insight you can gather as you prayerfull write your answers down.      

The first dream I analyzed had a real impact on my life.  I was caught in a window well with a spider headed straight for me.  Here is how I analyzed it:

Feelings: fear, panic

People: Me, the spider

Places/Things: window well, window

REAL LIFE:

Feelings: I was feeling overwhelmed and fearful about my schedule.  I was stretched to the max as a young mother, a daycare provider and a wife.

People: As I prayed and pondered about it I felt that the spider represented the demands in my life: my own demands, my husbands expectations, my children, the daycare children, church responsibilities etc.

Places/things: I began realizing that the window well was one I could see from the basement when I was doing daycare activities.  It represented being stuck in a rock and a hard place and being unable to escape to freedom.

When I got to this point I could see that something had to change.  I began examining my committments and letting goe of some of my expectations about keeping house, about the number of children I took in my daycare and I talked to Dan about his actual expectations. 

Within a few weeks I made these changes and I was able to reduce my stress and my feeling that I was caught between a window well and it’s window. 

Over the years I have used this formula and included my dreams in my journal.  I have found that the Lord communicates with us in many ways and sometimes it’s in our dreams.  I hope you enjoy trying out this new recipe and I hope it brings you sweet results!

Joy in the Touchdown!

I clicked into Amazon to gather information about my book sales for January 2009 only to discover that there were no sales. I thought of all the posts, newsletters and blogs I had created and felt discouragement welling up inside me like a sponge in my chest soaking up any hope or encouragement within. I had committed to 8-10 hours a week of marketing to help my books find new homes and now this. Discouraged I looked around the kitchen where my desktop computer resided and silently prayed, “Please Father. “I am trying to follow thy will. I want to bless the lives of others but I don’t think it will happen at this rate.”

Standing I stretched backward to relieve my tired back then began to pace through our forest green couches. “What more could I have done? How can I get my books to those who need them? How can I feel at least a little progress?”

The day continued and I became increasingly frustrated. Soon I found myself thinking “Why try. I may as well give up my marketing efforts and do something productive! I can give my remaining books to my children and their children and their children”

By 2:00 I began teaching guitar and kept busy doing what I love. Cheering those who were practicing and encouraging those who were not.

It was nearly 6:30 when Mary and her daughter, Elizabeth came. Elizabeth was a new student and we spent much of the lesson on orientation and helping her get started on her first song. Just before she left Mary said “I looked at your website and I loved it. Do you have any books here that I could buy?”

Mary didn’t know it at the time but she was a direct answer to my prayer as she continued “I have been looking for something just like this.”

Mary followed up the next week by sharing “I could hardly put your book down. It was an answer to my prayers.”

I once read of a football player who had trained and paid the price to make a touchdown. When the big game came he was tackled just 2 inches from a touchdown. Instead of giving up he kept on doing what he was doing and finally made that touchdown.

I am thankful that my Heavenly Father and his angels were mindful of me and my heartfelt desire to get a book to Mary so that we could both find joy in the touchdown and hope for the future.

Danger: Nervous Mother in for Repair!!

2008-12_c-78-copyThe kids are fighting, the soup is burning, the carpet looks gray instead of beige and I am on the verge of crying. Why did I get myself into this mess?

Such was a day my life as a young mom. In desperation I cut out a stop sign out of white paper and wrote in bold, black marker: “DANGER!! Nervous Mother in for Repair!” I then told my kids that I had to have at least 10 – 15 minutes alone before I exploded! I stuck the sign on my bedroom door with scotch tape and listened to the peaceful sound of the door knob clicking as it closed me into my bedroom and I threw myself face up on the unmade bed.

Peace was short lived, however, as pleas of “Mommy, open the door!”, “This isn’t funny!” and “Heidi pulled my hair!” infiltrated through the space at the bottom of the door. My choice to take 10 – 15 minutes 2 – 3 times a day during the next few weeks continued to bring bangs and whines like storms, that threatened to invade my home. Yet, like storms, as my determination to take “repair time” continued, the storms began to decline and finally gave way as the kids realized that when I came out of the room I was a much nicer mom. The real proof of the success of the idea was when my daughter said “Maybe you need time out mom!”

It has been many years since I wrote that first sign. Now my daughters have children of their own and use signs of their own. And so, my stress-reduction tip for the day today is:
WHEN LIFE GETS TOUGH AND PEACE GROWS THIN
PUT OUT YOUR SIGN AND GO IN!

An Innocent Looking Turtle-Neck Sweater

It’s 2:00 A.M. and I’ve been up since 1:00 with neck pain. Who would have thought that pulling a turtle-neck sweater over my head could cause me so much trouble? I’ve already been to the chiropractors twice and I’m going again tomorrow. Yet, with a degenerative neck disorder, I guess I should have known that such a thing could happen. I should been more careful when I tried wriggling and then forcing my head through that narrow opening like a babe pushing her way into the world.

As I rub muscle relaxant over the base of my neck and chug a few exedrine down the hatch, I think of other situations in my life where I should have been more aware and protective of my weaknesses.

Times when I should have stayed out of conversations where there was negative comments being made rather than finding myself adding to the fuel then feeling the after pains of judgment. Times when I put myself into situations where I agreed to do things out of approval addiction then felt the tight grip of guilt as I found that I couldn’t follow-through. Times when I didn’t tell the whole truth so I wouldn’t “get into trouble” with someone then felt an accusing conscience “prick me” as I realized that I should retrace my steps and be fully honest.

Now, as I consider whether to try to take my weary neck back to bed or whether to start the day early I hope that I will recognize and admit my weaknesses more fully and avoid the turtle-necks in my life. (By the way, I’m giving away my turtle neck sweater. Any takers?)

Remembering the Risks of Remodeling

“No one told me that I would risk loosing my sanity when we remodeled.  We had only been remodeling our house for 5 weeks now but it felts like it had been 5 months!  Sometimes I couldn’t even find a fork!”  Paula lamented.  “The only way I got through the no-water, no-kitchen, frig-in-the-living room stage was by looking at drawings and diagrams of what the kitchen would look like when it was finished.  I had to keep the end in sight in order to keep my sanity in check!”

 

Paula went on to liken her kitchen remodel to her experiences here on earth.  “I think that in order to get through the “stuff” we have get through here on earth we have to visualize our eventual reunion in heaven!”

 

I chuckled a little as I listened and thought of our own remodeling a few years ago.  We used a crock pot, a can opener and fast food to get by. 

 

I think of many times in my life when I felt as though I was being remodeled.  C.S. Lewis once wrote about remodels when he talked about the mansion Jesus plans to build of our lives.  A mansion with plenty of enlarging and remodeling experiences.

 

My foster daughter, Josie and her husband and four children are going through a remodeling right now.  The truck that smashed into their apartment left them practically homeless. David’s parents welcomed them into their own home for the first month or so after the event.  They are coming to live in our home next week as they continue to look for a home.  David and Josie are good examples of trying to look past the bags, boxes, suitcases, lost toothbrushes and not-home feeling as they prayerfully save and scrimp and visualize their future home.

 

The next time I get that anxious, worried, “take a deep breath”, “I just can’t do this” feeling, I hope I will stop and think of my heavenly home and remember the finished “product,” my Father, Jesus and others greeting me.  Also a place where I don’t have to search for forks.
